Hortense Anda-Bührle

Ten years ago, I photographed Hortense Anda-Bührle for du magazine. Anda-Bührle was an entrepreneur, art collector, and the daughter of a controversial arms manufacturer. At one point, she was the wealthiest woman in the wealthiest country on earth.

Republik just used one of these archival pictures, which led me to look for outtakes on my hard drives. It wasn’t an easy assignment, and du was never allowed to publish it.

Ms. Anda-Bührle hated being photographed and wasn’t particularly accommodating. I like her portraits, though, and remember the shoot vividly even today.
